Beginner Hike - Saturday, November 7 on the Green Knob Trail
off the BRP. We will meet and carpool from Lowes Foods on 321N in Hickory near
Arby's at 9:30AM or from Sims Pond on the BRP at 10:30AM. If anyone would like
to meet at the Jack-in-the Box in Lenoir, let me know. We will not plan a stop
there unless its requested. The Green Knob Trail is only a 2.4 mile loop, but it
can be a good physical workout. It is one of my favorite trails because of the
variety of vegetation and terrain.....a pond, thickets of rhododendron and
laurel, a hardwood forest, a stream, a pasture, a climb, a descent and a view of
Grandfather Mountain and Price Lake from a vantage point on a clear day (which
weatherman Ray has forecast).
If the participants would like more exercise, we can drive about a
mile south on the BRP to the Price Lake Loop, which is another 2.5 mile
relatively level walk around the perimeter of Price Lake. The hike would finish
off with a visit to a local restaurant.
If you would like to participate, e-mail Monica Olinger by Friday
evening at 8PM. My address is:
monicaolinger@embarqmail.com
If you have any questions, call me at 828-294-0309. You can pick and
choose the activities and we can arrange driving arrangements accordingly-you
may want to opt out of the restaurant meal or the second hike. Hiking time would
involve a few hours, depending on the group.
Bring along water, a snack, good comfortable hiking shoes, a
walking stick and layered clothing. The Green Knob is a moderate beginner hike
and the Price Lake Loop is an easy beginner hike. Think about spending a nice
autumn day outdoors in our local mountains with fellow travelers who appreciate
the beauty of nature. |

Trail Maintenance - Tim Johnson is planning on leading a
maintenance trip on EITHER Wednesday, November 11th, OR Saturday,
November 14th. Our goal will be to clean old leaves and sediment out of the
existing waterbars and trim back woody vegetation on Little Lost Cove Cliffs
Trail. If time permits, we will also be working on Hunt Fish Falls Trail as
well. Any club members that would like to participate need to bring gloves,
proper footwear and clothing, water and snacks. Each trail is approximately 2
miles total walking distance.
Our group has made a commitment to the US Forest Service and trail
users to maintain this trail. Please help give back to the trails, by
volunteering some time to help fulfill this commitment. No experience is
necessary, and it will be a great time for fellowship and fun.
I will need a count of folks planning on attending by Friday night,
November 6th so we can work out arrangements to get tools for the group. IF
YOU WOULD LIKE TO JOIN US, PLEASE EMAIL ME WHICH DATE WORKS BEST FOR YOU.
Meeting place will be at the Gas Station in Jonas Ridge at 9:00 am (Hwy 181).
Larry will set up a carpool in Hickory at 8:00 am and will be traveling through
Morganton if anyone from there is going on the trip.
Contact Tim by phone at 828-430-6819 before 10 pm or email
day_hiker@hotmail.com if you have any questions. Note: If responding by
email, include both Tim and Larry
nank93@hughes.net
in the sent to box.
If you plan to meet us at Jonas Ridge, please denote this. Thanks. |
